Overwhelming performance with A13 Bionic
The iPhone 11 has a new chip with a third-generation Neural Engine. The Neural Engine is the part of the A13 chip that handles machine learning processes, and it’s capable of up to seven trillion operations per second. It processes all of your device’s on-device AI applications, including FaceID and Animoji, so you can make augmented reality applications that you can use without an internet connection.
Apple’s Neural Engine
The Neural Engine is built in a 7-nanometer process and has separate cores for image processing and general computation. That allows the chip to handle image processing tasks at 60 frames per second, making it possible for Apple to make an iPhone with a dual camera system.
The image signal processor (ISP) uses a technology called Smart Forming to let you take four shots simultaneously and then select the sharpest one after deciding which images were best. A bit of extra processing power also makes it possible for the iPhone 11 to use more advanced HDR techniques when taking photos in low light.
It will automatically adjust exposure levels to bring out details in both dark and bright areas while avoiding overexposure in the highlights, so you end up with images with better contrast than those taken on previous iPhones.
The A13 processor also uses updated neural engine instructions that allow apps to take advantage of machine learning algorithms for faster processing.
More to do, even better battery life
In terms of battery life, Apple says you can stream video for 10 hours and play it back for 18 hours without needing a recharge. It does seem like iPhones tend to have good-to-great battery life compared to other iPhones—I don’t know if this is an Apple thing or just that people who own iPhones tend to be more mindful about conserving their battery (or both). Either way, the iPhone 11 is a solid bet if long battery life is important to you.
It’s very much the same as last year’s iPhone XS
We’re not going to lie: the design of this new phone is pretty much identical to last year’s iPhone XS. That’s because Apple didn’t see any reason to change something that works.
Design:
The iPhone 11 is still an aluminum and glass device with a notch at the top of the screen that houses the camera, face recognition stuff, and other sensors that make this phone work.
If you’ve been following Apple for a while, the iPhone 11 design shouldn’t surprise you. It’s basically the same as the iPhone XS that came out last year: a glass back and front with stainless steel sides.
The only real difference in this year’s model is that it has six color options: Black, Green, Purple, Red, White, Yellow, and a new style of the camera bump.
Display:
The iPhone 11’s design is, of course, the most important feature. It’s an upgrade in nearly every way from the iPhone XS, which was released last year: The screen has a slightly larger diagonal, and it’s now 6.1 inches (15.5 cm) instead of 5.8 inches (14.7 cm). What’s more, the screen is brighter than ever before and features both HDR and Dolby Vision support, thanks to its Liquid Retina HD LCD technology. The resolution is also higher at 1366 x 740 pixels (instead of 1080 x 1920 pixels).
Camera:
It also has dual-camera setup on the back side with two 12-megapixel lenses—one wide-angle lens and one primary lens—for brilliant portrait shots. And then there’s the stainless steel frame and glass front and back panels that make up this gorgeous device that is as beautiful as it is powerful.
